The reality is that not everyone wants to venture off to some cubicle on a daily basis for work reasons. Working from home jobs have their appeal. The goal is to get real freedom, not just a better paycheck. Is it a pipe dream? Not at all! Life does not just have to be about slaving away in a cubicle, tiny office or customer service job.

You may have asked yourself before, who ever gets real telecommuting jobs? The answer is pretty much anyone that pursues them diligently enough. Whether you know it or not, there are plenty of working from home jobs to go around. Naturally some may be more suitable to you and your skill sets than others. For instance, maybe you have a degree in technical writing. This is a wonderful place to start. You can use this degree to obtain job positions from the comfort of your own home. There are employers that you can encounter on the web, who are looking for technical writers to assist them with various projects. This typically means that you will get to write from a remote location, such as your home.

If you need some assistance getting started, you may want to take a glance at websites like Workahelpo.com, YourAVON.com, and MedicalCodingDegrees.net. These are just a few of the many websites that can assist you with learning more about working from home jobs. Another simple thing you can do to acquire more information is do a web search. Type work from home positions into a search engine, along with your degree or skills. This may sound simple, but it is a great way to find out more about any work from home positions that are out there, and suitable for someone like you. If you enjoy cosmetics, and would like to sell them, you might want to consider a company like Avon.

When it comes to telecommuting, a lot just depends on the type of work you are willing to do, and what you would be good at. What you should not do is assume from-home job positions are all filled, or that they do not apply to you. This is not true! Just to give you a better idea of some jobs you could potentially do from home, we will go over a list. Some of these are a copywriter, editor, sales representative, telemarketer, graphic designer, data entry specialist, and private business owner. It is always a good idea to do some brainstorming in the beginning, so you can better decide what position is right for you.

Job searching can be a long process. Finding a telecommuting job can be even more difficult during the economic recession which has brought with it widespread unemployment. In fact, the coveted full time, high paying job with benefits, whether at the office or working from home, is more difficult to find. It won’t always be like that, but if you are having trouble finding work, you may want to see what you can find in temporary jobs. You may initially think these jobs are not for you, and if you are a stay at home mom, you have the extra burden of getting childcare for the hours spent away from the home. However, in the long term, if temporary positions can help you earn money while looking for something else, and they can also help you expand and enhance your resume if you do it the right way.

Some feel that if they take a short-term hire, they are going to look unstable to possible, future employers. If you have been jumping from job to job for a long time, that may be the case, but if you take the right temp jobs, you are going to look like a better choice for an employee. You have to find the right jobs or opportunities that move you forward in your choice of career, not ones that stall you out or even move you in a backwards direction. Temporary work can do more than just pay the bills for the time being.

You can go about finding these jobs in a few different ways. You can call around and ask for temp positions at different companies in your area and in your line of work, but this can be exhausting and often fruitless. Instead, you should look for a good temp agency. There are a few different types, so choose the right one. Some specialize in temporary jobs in the business sector, and others work with those in highly specialized careers or more labor intensive jobs. Call around and find the best one in your area, and then make an appointment to go in for an interview.

When you go to sign up for temporary jobs, they are going to interview you much like any company would when you apply for a job. They have to sell you to your prospective employers, so they need more information from you. If you have special skills, they may have some testing to see where your skill level lies. If you run computer software, for example, they may test you so that they can tell employers that you can indeed do what a job may require. After this is all over, they then start looking for work for you.

You can accept or reject any offers you want. You may find temporary jobs that last a week, a day, or a few months. Companies need temp workers to fill job vacancies, maternity leaves, and unexpected employee loss. Not only are you going to gain experience that you can add to your resume, you may find that some jobs can become permanent. Think of some temporary jobs as on the job interviews. Not all lead to employment, but they all pay and they all offer experience. Not only can they see if they like you, you can see if you like the job. Temping can be great experience if you go into it with the right attitude, determination, and goals.

When seeking a job you are probably very concerned about frequently asked interview questions and how you can answer them effectively. There are some old standards that many interviewers use when they are seeking new employees, and these have been around for a very long time for one very good reason – they work. If you understand the questions and know what the interviewer is trying to find out, you can better answer the questions in a positive and persuasive manner.

One of the most frequently asked interview questions you may hear in any interview is the question about where you see yourself in five or ten years. This tells an interviewer many things about you. They can tell if you are likely to stay with a job, and if you plan ahead. This also tells them that you have ambitions for yourself that will make you a good employee. Don’t make the mistake of saying that you want to get married or have kids in five years, as they only want to hear about your career ambitions. Think this question out well before you start any job search.

If you wince when you hear the question, “What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses?” you are not alone. This is one of the most frequently asked interview questions used in just about any industry. They want to know that you are aware that you are not perfect, and they also want to know that you have a belief that you are an asset to a company that may hire you. There are some pat and common answers out there that many people give. Try to avoid those and come up with truthful answers that will not make you look like a bad candidate.

Some people come right out and ask you why they should hire you. Be prepared for this very common of frequently asked interview questions. This is a tricky question, but you will do fine with it if you put some thought into it beforehand. It is much like the strengths and weaknesses question. Let them know why you will be a good employee, what your strengths are in both education and experience, and what makes you someone they can rely on to do a good job. Mention any special job-related talents. Don’t make this too hard. Ask those you know what they think would make you a good employee. Often friends and loved ones see things about us that we do not notice.

Lastly, other than being ready for some of these frequently asked interview questions, have some questions of your own ready when you go in. You should do research and know a lot about the company to which you are applying, but you should also have some questions to ask your interviewer. If you do not ask them any questions, they may assume you are looking for a job – any job – rather than that you have a desire to work for their company in particular. It helps when they know you have chosen to apply to them for a reason, not just because no one else has yet to hire you.

It is a question that needs to be asked: how can you write an impressive resume without lying? You know the job market is tight and you are competing with hundreds, perhaps thousands. If you are re-entering the workforce with gaps in your job history, or after years of being a stay at home mom, it can be even more of a challenge, especially if you are looking for a telecommuter job where your resume will have to impress all the more. So what to do?

Well, first of all, as we all know we absolutely must not fabricate. An untruth on your resume is no longer as easy to get away with as it once was. Our society today is all about background checks and internet records. If you are making something up, sooner or later you will be caught and potential employers may likely share their discovery with friends in the entire industry.

If you look, you will find that there is a grand tradition in any profession of lying for a good job and getting caught, even at the highest levels; the CEO of Radio Shack, David Edmondson as well as the CEO of Bausch & Lomb, Ronald Zarrella are prime examples. They claimed imaginary qualifications and achievements. Read more at: When the Résumé Is Not to Be Believed

So take that as a cautionary tale; don’t inflate your resume with falsehoods. What you want to do, instead, is to highlight and augment the positive.

It happens when there are uncomfortable truths about your past that are really not that important. Sometimes, the complete truth is actually not advised. Maybe at one point you quit work a year to better take care of your very young children; maybe you skipped from job to job ten to the year at one point. How do you fudge in situations like these? To begin with, for a problem with chronology, a good way to fudge is to just create a resume that is functional – and not laid out year by painful year. You’ll then have no holes in your resume to patch up.

What happens when they come out and ask you questions about things, honest answers to which would not really be discreet. For instance, you could have departed from your previous job rather in a hurry to leave behind an unpleasant boss or maybe a workplace romance that didn’t turn out well. If you bare your soul about the real reason you had to leave the job behind, it will make you look unprofessional. Spinning and fudging a little bit would only make you discreet, not untruthful. You can say that the team play at a previous workplace was not what you had hoped for, but you don’t have to go into specifics. It’s important to use whatever office parlance is in vogue at the time. The phrase ‘culture and personality match’ just happens to go over well these days.

Sometimes, what you would be tempted to think of as a negative could actually work to your advantage if you try to not hide it. For instance, if you had to take five years off to raise your infant children well enough that they could take care of themselves in kindergarten, this is a way to drop out of work that is actually approved of these days. Raising children is a lesson in extreme patience, and these are skills that your employer could possibly use. Unless the sabbatical you took was to lie about at home and watch TV, you could actually spin it to make it sound really good, as it undoubtedly is. Traveling the world, taking care of a sick parent, raising your children, all are considered valid reasons to need to drop out of work for. Just make sure that you don’t call it “stayed back at home”. Stress the skills you learned while you did so – raising young children to be strapping and strong.

If you have been seeking work from home you are aware of data entry work. Legitimate? Yes, but with a caveat and an explanation.

If you are considering data entry work, think about yourself, your work habits, and your past work history to see if that is really something you are cut out to do.

Data entry work seems pretty straight forward. You have information of some type that you are required to enter into some type of system, usually some type of software. It’s not necessarily as easy as you might think. First of all, if you have any degree of ADD or ADHD that is not treated, you may make more mistakes than others, leading to your dismissal. You have to have good focus or the mistakes are going to pile up. You may get distracted by anything, which is never good.

You also have to have some pretty decent typing skills to do data entry work. This means that you can type without watching where your fingers on are on the keyboard. Hunting and pecking is not going to work in this field of work. Also, you have to be able to get to the numbers on the keyboard without making mistakes, which is hard for some people. Take a typing tests that requires the use of numbers as well as the use of the regular number keys to see how well you do. Some data entry work is phone numbers, addresses, and stock numbers, which means you have to be good with those number keys.

Many data entry work opportunities come and go. You may get work for six months before you are laid off. Some jobs are long term, but they are the hard ones to find. If you find that you love the solitary work that is data entry, then keep taking the short term jobs to get the experience you need under your belt. That way, when you find data entry work that have the potential to be a long lasting job, you have something more to offer than just skills. You also have experience that others may not have.

YouTube Link

You can also find some data entry work that allows you to work from home. First, be sure the job is real because there are many scams out there. Secondly, but sure your life is set up so that you can be productive at home. This means your children are in school or you have someone who can watch them for you. Working at home can mean working in your pajamas and taking breaks or working when you have the time, but you have to treat it as a real job or it will not last long. Not everyone is cut out to work at home, so make sure all is well on your end before you take this on.

That’s the latest on data entry work…legitimate or not.

If you are looking for part time work from home opportunities, your first stop should be at www.craigslist.org. You will have to wade through some irrelevant ads and a few crazies and scammers, but if you know how and where to look, you could find yourself doing a great part time work from home job. These part time work from home jobs have some great fringe benefits.

The biggest of these benefits is that you don’t have to deal with everybody’s different personalities when you have to go to an office. If you hate driving five miles an hour for two hours a day while stuck in freeway traffic, part time work from home might just seem like the ticket to staying sane. When you work for yourself you never have to kowtow to some self-important boss. Sure you may make a little less, but just think of all the time you will save, not to mention gas.

Stress is one of the biggest health threats in our country today. With so many people stuck in traffic and stuck in their nine to five, grind it out, staring at the wall clock and counting down each second until you get to go home, miserable jobs, you would think that more people would just love to be able to do part time work from home. But most folks just don’t know how to motivate or organize themselves enough to be successful at working from home. In order to have the luxury of working from your home, you first need to be able to be strict with yourself. Just because you are working from home does not mean that you don’t have to work. You still have to do some sort of hourly or flat fee labor otherwise you just don’t get paid and you will at some point have to either get a real job (God forbid) or become a homeless person. It is your choice.

If you can become disciplined enough to get up early (not too early since you don’t need to get dressed or drive anywhere) and work hard until mid afternoon or so (just in time for your nap), you can definitely find enough part time work from home to fill up some hours and make yourself some decent income.

Craigslist gigs run the gamut from dog-walking, resume writing, blog posting, film acting, extra work, to entertainment such as wedding bands wanted. Most of them don’t pay all that great and a lot of them just say “No” under compensation, but you need to stay tenacious and check every day. New postings crop up quick so if you see a job that you even remotely may qualify for, you should just apply for it and see what happens. Even if you get a resounding “No” you may pick up two gigs the next day. With income from home you just need to try it once and you may never go back to the factory.

Mobile gadgets are revolutionizing the workplace and fostering telecommuting. But, as ComputerWorld’s Mike Elgan reports, with mobile gadgets comes a pitfall, finding an outlet to recharge them.

The Consumer Electronics Show trade show is showcasing this year’s batch of better, cheaper and cooler gadgets. Services that enable ever more powerful mobile capabilities abound. Wireless networks are popping up everywhere. It’s now possible to travel around town, across the country and all over the world, working and playing online thanks to the collective efforts of thousands of companies and the enthusiasm of millions of users. There’s just one problem: Finding an outlet.

I’m writing this column while on a three-week trip through Mexico and Central America. I’m not taking time off; I’m “extreme telecommuting” — working while traveling. I thought I packed my gadgets pretty well, taking everything I needed but no more than necessary. I’m currently staying in a private home — roughly the Mexican equivalent of a bed-and-breakfast inn. I knew in advance that Mexico and El Salvador use U.S.-compatible plugs, so I brought no adapters. Imagine my horror when I discovered that the outlets in the house are two-prong plugs, rather than three-prong plugs. It’s not a huge deal — I could easily break off the grounding plug and ever so slightly increase my chances of being electrocuted to death, but I’d rather not.

I’m counting my blessings. In August of 2006, I spent some time on the Honduran island of Roatan. I pushed a column deadline right down to the wire before looking for a place to file from. Suddenly, the power went out on the entire island and stayed that way for eight hours. My laptop was fully charged, but all the routers and servers that provide Internet service to the island were out. The rumor on the beach was that somebody forgot to buy the diesel fuel that powers the generators.

StellaCommute offers a no-frills outline of a proposal you can write to persuade your employer to allow you to telecommute. StellaCommute points out that it is essential to stick to the facts, i.e. how telecommuting benefits your employer:

The most important thing to realize when you’re pitching telecommuting is that the boss doesn’t really care that much about your reasons for wanting to do it Don’t waste your breath explaining about your blood pressure, the fact that your high school kid can’t be trusted home alone with the cable TV, how you can’t morally justify driving your car three hours a day in an era when the polar ice caps are dissolving.

These “facts” just cloud your proposal. And they don’t help make your case.

Your boss only wants to know just how is it that you propose to actually get work done in your pajamas. Better yet, she wants your assurances that you won’t ever work in your pajamas.
